About Hanthana House

Hanthana is a traditional Hill Country village surrounded by impressive mountains, verdant tea estates and natural forests, a place to relax and commune with nature. The village is close to Kandy, which was the last royal capital of Sri Lanka and a major tourist destination.

Hanthana House is located in the wonderful natural surroundings of the beautiful Hanthana Mountain Range, with its extensive tea estates and mixed-species forests, offering a holiday full of indelible memories.  The house consists of accommodation of elegant simplicity and provides a comfortable stay in attractive surroundings with the added benefit of tasty and authentic Sri Lankan home cooking which you can learn to prepare yourself!

Hanthana House has four Deluxe Rooms (three doubles & one twin) and three Standard Rooms (two doubles & one twin). All rooms include an attached bathroom with hot water shower, wash basin and toilet, air conditioning, ceiling fan, mosquito net, desk & chair, recliner, bedside cabinets, wardrobe, luggage rack, and a generous balcony with views over the neighbouring tea estate and beyond. The top-level Deluxe Rooms have wonderful views of far-flung Hunasgiriya and the Knuckles Mountain Range to the east. Triple rooms are possible although they are suitable for children only. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout most of the property, and bottled water as well as tea and coffee making facilities (on request) are offered free of charge. All meals may be ordered in advance and are served in the family dining room.

Local activities include a traditional Sri Lankan cookery class, walking trails and hikes, and a visit to the Ceylon Tea Museum.

Hanthana House is approximately 15 minutes’ drive from Kandy in the foothills of the Hanthana Mountain Range, an area famous for cultivating some of the first tea grown on the island and the location of the Ceylon Tea Museum. Please be aware that a homestay is neither a hotel nor a guesthouse as you live and socialise with a family in their home. Think of it as an extension of your own home, with the usual creature comforts and may be no-one to make your bed or clean your room on a daily basis! The real experience is the interaction with a Sri Lankan family as they go about their daily life.

For stays of two nights or more, Hanthana House provides free transfers from the railway station or main post office in Kandy. Please contact us at hanthanahouse@gmail.com or call +94 777 374 560 to arrange.

Hanthana House also arranges tours and transfers as well as train tickets, on request. Please be aware that train tickets may need to be purchased a few days in advance.

Very nice †owners‡, clean room, good location

The guesthouse is located out the city centre which makes that you wake up with nature sounds in stead of cars. The food is delicious. The owners do everything they can to help you, a really good service indeed! We did the cookingclass which was very informative and really tasteful. The rooms are very very clean and spacious!
Would stay here again!

Stunning views

We stayed at Hanthana house early Sept. The owner , Patti, organised transport for us from Colombo. On arrival he gave us a free room upgrade . The house is situated in the hills above Kandy. The view from our balcony was stunning and the bird song tremendous, it felt like we were in the rainforest. Paths and his family were very welcoming, we ate traditional Sri Lankan food which was delicious, although they were happy to make alternatives. Pathi organised a car and driver for us to visit Kandy. The prices for all the extras were very fair and honestly billed and itemised on departure. A very pleasant stay.
